Chapter Ten
After breakfast on Tuesday, Abby took the grease drawer outside. It was kept next to the griddle on the larger stove. Grease and debris were scraped into it each time someone cooked another batch of eggs or bacon or pancakes. Keeping the griddle clean made the food taste better, but the drawer had to be emptied once each meal was over.
Her nose wrinkled as she carried it to the grease barrel behind the kitchen. Though they dumped it twice a day, the used grease reeked. She opened the barrel while balancing the drawer with care. Using a long spatula to slide the grease and food out of the drawer, she made sure the drawer didnât fall into the barrel. Sheâd done that once and learned her lesson after spending hours washing grease off the stainless-steel drawer.
That was a lesson she didnât need to be taught a second time.
As she closed the grease barrel and made sure it was secure so wandering bears, hungry after their winter hibernation, couldnât force it open and make a mess of the whole parking lot, she paused and looked down the hill. Listening to the birds and smiling when she saw a full-chested robin hunting in the grass, she watched the water in Washboard Brook tumble over the rocks.
A phone rang in the distance, but she ignored it. The men working on the house rebuilding sites wouldnât be ready for their midmorning kaffi for another hour. They were the only ones who called the community center. Everyone else contacted the secretary at the chapel.
She took in a deep breath. If she spread her arms, could she take off like the birds and soar through the early-spring morning? Laughing at her folly, she grimaced when she saw the grease staining her hands. Sheâd better wash it off right away.
When she went inside, Abby propped open the door to let in the fresh breezes, but had to close it after too many bugs decided to come in. What they needed was a screen door. That way the wood door could be left open to let air circulate through the kitchen. She would ask Pastor Hershey if there were screens for the door and windows. Soon they would be roasted as much as the food if they couldnât open up the kitchen and let fresh air in.
Would she be in Evergreen Corners by the time summer arrived?
She sighed. After their worship service on Sunday, sheâd heard Dwight and Roy talking about how theyâd be finishing their time in the village at monthâs end. Isaac had hinted she should leave in the hired van with them. Sheâd told him she couldnât go while she was helping with the youth group. Her brother had said heâd talk to Glen about the program and see what could be done.
Why did Isaac have to be so insistent that he knew best for her? She was taking care to do what needed to be done instead of what her heart longed to do.
